Career

Before training as an attorney, Jim worked as a network analyst for IBM UK, maintaining a System/36 midrange computer and its associated personal computers.  While studying engineering, he worked on lathes and welders on the metalworking shop floor of a supplier of automotive transmission components for Land Rover Defender cars and Bedford trucks. He was also trained on many fabrication techniques by BAE Systems where he later transferred into an aircraft final assembly plant to experience the installation and testing of engines, undercarriage, hydraulics, avionics, ejector seats, parachutes and weapons systems.

Upon qualification as a patent attorney, Jim was awarded the CIPA Drafting Prize for the highest mark in the UK in the patent drafting exam.

His patent practice centres on a wide range of mechanical engineering concepts, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, turbomachinery, sports & fitness equipment, environmental, greentech / cleantech, renewables, marine, transport, civil and construction fields. Jim has worked on virtually all aspects of automobiles over many years, including powertrain, body, chassis, suspension, engine and ancillaries, trim, safety, aero, electrical, networks and connected car tech and he has also gained experience on trucks, cycles and the railway industry. He also has expertise in engineering materials, including composites and alloys. His work in health tech includes surgical devices and medical devices, such as respiratory and implantable devices, and the application of evolving digital health tech to them. He also has a particular interest in additive printing, including 3D printer configuration, filament/ media composition, CAD and CAM/ slicing software and post-print processing.

He also acts in relation to trade marks and designs.

Much of his work concerns prosecution and opposition under European and UK practice, although he has extensive world-wide experience of IP matters. He is also experienced in running infringement litigation and disputes in various jurisdictions.
