Career

Matthew works across the high-tech sectors with a particular focus on telecommunications, software, medical devices and oil and gas.

In his career Matthew has acted for or on behalf of the world’s largest mobile network operator, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer and the leading smartphone manufacturer in many markets.

In medical devices, Matthew works on prosthetic heart valves, in both prosecution and contentious matters. These specific valves are being contested between some of the world’s largest heart valve manufacturers, for example, Abbot St. Jude, Edwards Lifesciences, Boston Scientific, Scimetis and Medtronic. It is estimated that the TAVR market is likely to be worth US $12.2billion dollars by 2025.

Matthew also leads a project with a client to protect the next wave of standardised video compression at SMPTE and MPEG. Standardised video compression is the backbone of the modern web and streaming services. This new technology will provide FRAND licensing at the core of the next generation of the web and streaming.

Matthew also supports global giant Schlumberger as one of only two providers in Europe following successful consolidation, leading to alternate processes and fee structures to meet the needs of modern businesses. Matthew secured an important win in 2019 at EPO proceedings to protect one of Schlumberger’s key products. Matthew also supports Venture Capitalists in Scandinavia with their Oil & Gas IP Due Diligence.

While the above refers primarily to large corporates, Matthew also takes great job satisfaction from supporting start-ups and SMEs and this is a large part of his work. One of Matthew’s start-ups received great press interest in 2019 (eg. Forbes and The Economist).
