Career

Graham initially trained at Gill Jennings & Every (GJE) before being recruited by a small provincial IP firm that offered him direct exposure to many small clients and the opportunity to cross-train in trade marks, which he viewed as a good way to become a well-rounded IP attorney. He subsequently moved on to apply his IP skills in-house as IP Counsel at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, developing his commercial acumen in relation to how IP fits into the bigger picture and gaining extensive experience in contentious matters, with a particular bias to freedom-to-operate matters, in the process. From Teva he moved back into private practice, honing his skills at another top-tier London IP firm for several years before deciding to return home to GJE, where he has since joined the partnership.

The breadth of Graham’s technical expertise across all aspects of IP, and his experience of working both in-house and in private practice, mean he is expertly positioned to advise clients of all sizes, at whatever stage of their lifecycle, in relation both to technical and strategic IP matters. As such, Graham is growing a sizeable practice in the Advanced Engineering and MedTech sectors, heading up the firm’s Advanced Engineering Sector group.

Graham has a lot of expertise in advising tech start-ups in developing and implementing robust IP strategies that enable them to grow their business and attract the necessary investment to do so, and he regularly receives new referrals for such clients. As part of this advice, Graham often performs invention capture sessions and IP audits to help clients recognise and understand their IP, and how best to protect it with a view to generating revenues and increasing company valuations.

Working with start-ups does not detract from Graham’s interest in supporting larger clients, however, as he advises numerous household names on their IP matters. Of particular interest, Graham has recently engaged with a global corporation that is a household name in the field of renewable energy, and he is currently engaged in advising a new client on a co-ownership and patent licensing deal with another globally recognised company in the field of engineering and transportation.
