Position

As head of the EIP Elements practice group, Darren has technical expertise in a range of fields, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, food chemistry, polymers, oligonucleotides, organic LEDs, semiconductors, metallurgy, batteries, and process chemistry.

He has 20 years of experience in private practice, having joined EIP from a position as Partner at the largest IP practice in the UK. Darren has considerable experience in handling difficult cases, contentious matters, and complex advisory work. He has particular experience of opposition and appeal hearings at the EPO, and has advised in relation to patent litigation in the UK and other European countries. Darren also has recognised expertise in the field of registered designs.

Darren is on the editorial board of the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice, to which he also frequently contributes. He blogged for The IPKat from 2012 to 2017 and also maintains a personal blog as IP Alchemist.

Career

Trained at Marks & Clerk, qualified 2001. Joined Marks & Clerk in 1998 and became partner in 2003. Joined EIP as partner in 2012.

Royal Society of Chemistry; Society of Chemical Industry; Society of Dyers & Colourists; AIPPI; was a member of the original editorial board of the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice and rejoined the board in 2013.

Education

Secondary School, Rugby School. Graduated with a MA in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) from Oxford University (New College), 1992. Graduated with a DPhil in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Oxford University (New College), 1996. Post-doc at Tokyo Insitute of Technology, 1996-1998.

The 'excellent' EIP is 'very responsive and professional in all matters' and has clients that include British American Tobacco, Unwired Planet and Visa. Jerome Spaargaren leads the team and specialises in electronics, computing and optics. He recently advised the semiconductor and software design company Arm on drafting and filing patents. Mechanical engineering expert Richard Gordon-Brown advised Airbus on drafting and prosecution issues. Other highlights for the firm included Chris Price advising Rakuten on opposing two patents relating to software and e-commerce and Matt Lawman assisting Reach Robotics with filing PCT applications. The 'extremely technical but also very personable' Iain Russell was recently made partner. Heather McCann, Laurence Brown, Andrew Sharples and Darren Smyth are also recommended.
