Position

Ian is dual-qualified as a professional engineer and as a lawyer, in the jurisdictions of England & Wales, Scotland (Registered Foreign Lawyer) and the Republic of Ireland (non-practising). He joined our firm as a partner in 2013 and specializes in major international engineering projects and related matters such as public procurement, long-term supply agreements, concessions and operations and maintenance. This has included sole legal responsibility for drafting and negotiating an engineering contract with a contract sum in excess of US$4 billion.

As well as undertaking project structuring, contract drafting and negotiation, he has a wealth of experience of resolving disputes, in particular their effective early management in order to avoid reaching formal proceedings. He has been involved in ad hoc, ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, ICSID, DIAC and ADCCAC arbitrations and is an accredited mediator. As a practising international arbitrator, he has sat on tribunals where the sum in dispute was in excess of US$100 million, and has been appointed as tribunal president where the sum in dispute was in excess of US$50 million. As a party representative, he has headed a team of 24 lawyers for a dispute in excess of US$2.3 billion.

Ian has a strong grasp of local laws and has been commissioned by Middle East government entities to prepare drafts of a number of laws and regulations.

Career

Ian has been resident in Abu Dhabi since early 2007, but his practice spans the region.
