Corporate/M&A Tier 2
At Comte & Font – Legalsa, 'what makes the firm unique is the level of engagement of each team member'. The team has strengths in a range of areas, including advising national and foreign investors on cross-border transactions and assisting with the establishment of new business ventures in Guatemala, and is particularly active in the energy and aviation sectors, advising a number of clients on the sale and acquisition of aircraft. David Font, who leads the team along with newly promoted partner Johann Hartleben, recently advised a sawmill company with operations across Latin America on a cross-border corporate restructure, and acted for Mexican telecoms corporation América Móvil on the $333m acquisition of Telefónica Móviles Guatemala. Intellectual property Tier 2
Comte & Font – Legalsa's strengths include advising companies in the technology and financial services sectors on the protection and defence of IP rights; advising artists and museums, as well as the Ministry of Culture and Sport, on copyright protection for art works; and handling large volumes of trade mark and patent registrations and renewals. The team also represents clients in IP litigation; recently, practice head Karina Calderón (who is arguably 'one of the best IP lawyers in Guatemala') defended Tuenti Technologies against Comunicaciones Celulares' opposition to the registration of one of its designs. Other clients include Diageo, Uniespecies and Chiquita. María Isabel Saravia, formerly an associate with the firm, left to start her own practice.
