Position

Stuart Tyler is a Partner and Group Head within the Corporate Department in Guernsey. Stuart deals with a number of corporate and commercial matters including fund raising, acquisitions, debt finance, financial services regulatory matters, insolvency, shareholder arrangements, insurance structures and the commercial aspects of trusts and foundations law.

Career

Stuart joined Appleby in January 2020 from Guernsey’s then largest single jurisdiction firm, where he had been a partner for the previous ten years. Stuart originally came to Guernsey in 2006, having previously been a partner at Stephenson Harwood LLP in London. Stuart qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1992 and as a Guernsey advocate in 2010.

Appleby specialises in handling multi-jurisdictional transactions and related regulatory matters, in particular those that are carried out via Guernsey schemes of arrangement, while also advising on the restructuring of UK-based financial institutions. The ‘absolutely first class’ Stuart Tyler leads the team, with a broad workload which spans acquisitions of insolvent companies, regulatory matters, debt financing and fundraising.

Appleby‘s ‘exceptionally commercial’ team specialises in funds and debt financing, supporting both borrowers and lenders with a variety of finance transactions while also advising on the setup of NAV, GP and co-investor facilities. The practice is also noted for its subscription finance work, as well as providing regulatory support for multi-jurisdictional transactions. Leading the group are Jeremy Berchem, noted for his expertise in bond issuances and debt instruments, as well as associated restructuring matters, and Stuart Tyler, who focuses on debt and acquisition financing.

Appleby makes use of its international network to advise professional trustees and corporations on a variety of trust matters, including the establishment of trust structures, issues between trustees and beneficiaries, and employee benefit trusts and pensions. Co-heads Jeremy Berchem and Stuart Tyler handle commercial matters related to trusts, notably transactions, while senior associate Paula Fry handles both contentious and non-contentious trust matters, including restructuring and mistake applications.
