The health and safety team at Burges Salmon LLP offers broad sector expertise drawing on resources from across the firm. The team has an especially strong presence in relation to the transport and food sectors, while also doing a significant amount of work for the construction, water, chemicals and renewables clients. All lawyers on the team are experienced civil litigators with a regulatory specialism, allowing them to act on both the criminal and civil issues arising from serious health and safety incidents. Ann Metherall leads the team and is one of the UK’s top names in the rail sector for health and safety issues. Recent addition Guy Bastable is the former head of corporate crime at BCL Solicitors LLP and Sian Edmunds is a leading expert in health and safety issues relating to food and drink. Senior associate Charlotte Whitaker  is regularly involved in high profile investigations and litigations under intense public scrutiny.

Burges Salmon LLP advises corporates on regulatory investigations and compliance issues relating to operations in the UK and abroad, with experience in acting against the NCA, SFO, and police, both throughout investigations and in litigation. The firm’s multi-jurisdictional expertise is reflected in its work for clients in Saudi Arabia, France, the BVI, and Israel, among others, with other notable capabilities including financial services work, both private and public. David Hall leads the primarily Bristol-based team, which is also active in London, specialising in complex money laundering and corruption cases, alongside Guy Bastable, who heads up the corporate crime department and offers broad expertise across AML, corruption, insider trading, and business regulatory issues.

It counts on the expertise of high-profile individuals in the sector including Guy Bastable, who joined the firm from BCL Solicitors LLP in May 2021 and specialises in environmental prosecutions, as well as Ian Salter and Ross Fairley, who focus on net-zero, nuclear new builds and decommissioning. Elsewhere, Ian Truman is another expert in the field of nuclear regulation and international nuclear law, and team head Michael Barlow has broad expertise with a workload that includes handling noise nuisance and coastal erosion claims. It particularly stands out for its expertise in the water sector, with its team representing a number of the UK’s nine water utilities. Burges Salmon LLP fields a team with broad expertise in the fraud space, having been bolstered by the arrival of Guy Bastable from BCL Solicitors in May 2021. Bastable works across the firm’s London, Bristol and Edinburgh offices and serves as head of corporate crime; he jointly leads the fraud practice alongside head of disputes David Hall. Together, Hall and Bastable provide proactive advice to clients on complying with anti-financial crime regulations, including the Bribery Act 2010, Criminal Finances Act 2017 and the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. On the contentious side, the practice handles interactions with regulators including the FCA, SFO and NCA as well as internal investigations, and also acts on shareholder disputes involving allegations of fraud. The practice continues to stand out in the market for its experience handling cross-border matters.

The environment practice at Burges Salmon LLP advises clients across the whole range of environmental matters within real estate, from contaminated land remediation through environmental risk management, liability issues and carbon law. The firm also counts the water sector and decommissioning of power stations amongst its key areas of expertise. Michael Barlow heads the team with expertise that includes water as well as environmental projects and disputes, and energy efficiency. In May 2021, Guy Bastable joined the practice from BCL Solicitors LLP, bringing to bear extensive experience in environmental disputes and prosecutions.
