Emmanuel JacomyShearman & Sterling LLP

With a strong footing in the energy, construction, private equity, telecoms and technology sectors, Shearman & Sterling LLP stands out for its experience in complex commercial disputes and investment treaty arbitration. The practice is also characterised by its involvement in matters with high-profile clients, including its recent representation of the PRC in ICSID arbitration. Splitting his time between Beijing and Singapore, Emmanuel Jacomy leads the practice, often acting for clients in high-stakes international disputes. In Hong Kong, dual-qualified counsel Edward Taylor is another key figure, regarded for his work in commercial and investment treaty disputes. In April 2022 Nils Eliasson departed the firm.

Singapore > International arbitration

The Shearman & Sterling LLP practice is ‘very experienced and client-oriented’ and is complimented for being ‘at the top of its game, in a very competitive international commercial arbitration landscape’. The firm represents clients in commercial and investment treaty disputes under leading arbitration rules and a range of national laws. Sector expertise includes energy, construction, mining, telecoms and technology. Emmanuel Jacomy is qualified in France, England and Wales, and Phnom Penh, and provides substantial expertise in international arbitration and litigation. He leads the team that was boosted by the 2022 arrival from Jones Day of Matthew Skinner, who is recommended as ‘very astute culturally and easy to work with’.

Hong Kong > Dispute resolution: international arbitration

Although it lacks senior practitioners on the ground in Hong Kong, particularly since Nils Eliasson‘s departure in April 2022 to King & Spalding LLP‘s Singapore office, Shearman & Sterling still provides excellent support to the firm’s Asia arbitration group, which is led from Beijing by Emmanuel Jacomy. Counsel Edward Taylor is a key member of the Hong Kong team and has significant expertise advising companies, governments and SOEs in commercial and investment treaty disputes.
