Career

Tony Chen is a partner at Jones Day Shanghai office. He advises pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies navigate China’s pharmaceutical patent linkage system for protecting new drugs. He assists them in procuring patents suitable for Orange Book listing and patent term extension. He represents innovators defending against patent invalidation challenges and Chinese biotechnology clients in creating IP assets on a worldwide basis in the areas of small molecules, biologics, gene therapy, cell therapy, gene editing, AI-enabled drug discovery, and RNA therapeutics. He supports life science clients in IP license negotiation and IPOs. Furthermore, Tony advises venture capital investors on mitigating IP risks associated with investing in Chinese biotechnology companies. He helps US and Chinese companies in complying with technology export control regulations in industries including semiconductor, lithium-ion battery, genetic resources, and artificial intelligence.  He advocates for strong IP protection in China as an advisory member of the U.S.-China IP Cooperation Dialogue organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Renmin University of China.
