Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow continues to act for multinationals in big-ticket and multi-jurisdictional disputes in South East Asia. The Singapore team is appearing more frequently in the Court of Appeal and is increasingly active in compliance and investigations, thanks in part to the efforts of Celeste Ang and Weiyi Tan. Restructuring, energy, shareholder, product liability, IP and tax disputes are also key areas of growth. The team is 'excellent, proactive and responsive', 'a safe bet for large complex cases' and 'displays acute commercial sensitivities and strategically anticipates issues down the line'. It acted for a number of major telecommunications providers and content providers in private criminal copyright proceedings before the State Courts of Singapore, against retailers of illicit streaming devices. Leng Sun Chan SC is 'efficient and user-friendly', 'a team player' and 'is a meticulous and persuasive advocate with a wide range of experience within shipping and in more general commercial disputes'. Nandakumar Ponniya is 'intellectually sharp, well connected and street smart'. Andy Leck is recommended for IP litigation.

The 'excellent' team at Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow is well known for its  brand protection skills combined with its 'business acumen' and team head Andy Leck stands out for his experience in the region. Ren Jun Lim handles both contentious and non-contentious matters including infringements, and the execution of anti-counterfeiting operations in Singapore and regionally. Abe Sun is a key name for patent work and is highly recommended by a client for his 'engineering background which is invaluable for complex patent applications'. In addition to the team's brand protection work for household name clients, it also undertakes a range of copyright infringement and patent prosecution and infringement work for clients in diverse industries. In a recent case, it acted for Sanrio Company (owner of brands such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, Little Twin Stars and Kurom) in the first case in Singapore brought against a freight forwarder (as the trans-shipper) for trade mark infringement in respect of counterfeit goods.

  • The New Turkish Code of Obligations: Important Changes for Leases of Residential & Business Premises

For decades, the primary Turkish laws governing leases of residential and business premises have been the Law on Leasing Real Property dated May 27, 1955 (the “Lease Law”) and the Turkish Code of Obligations No. 818 dated April 22, 1926 (the “Obligations Code”). Both of these laws, however, will be repealed and replaced with the new Turkish Code of Obligations No. 6098 dated January 11, 2011 (the “New Obligations Code”), which will enter into force on July 7, 2012.
