Position

James specialises in all areas of corporate tax, real estate tax and share schemes. He has particular expertise on the taxation of real estate investment, real estate development and urban regeneration.

James’ clients include global banks, listed companies, private companies, entrepreneurs and individuals, charities and landowners. He is a consulting editor on VAT, stamp duties and stamp duty land tax for Lexis Nexis Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents. He is also a member of the VAT Practitioners Group and a member of Law Society Stamp Taxes Working Group.

Career

Trained: Bevan Ashford; qualified 1997. James was a graduate recruit to ICI Fibres spending four years specialising in business strategy and marketing. He then converted to law, qualified into corporate tax and joined Pinsents for five years followed by three years with DLA. He joined Gateley in 2005 and was made a partner in 2006. Publications of note: James is the consulting editor on VAT, stamp taxes and stamp duty land tax for Lexis Nexis ‘Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents’ and wrote the property taxation chapters in the ‘Sale of Land’ Volumes 38(1), (2) and (3); James wrote the chapter on the VAT treatment of super-yacht transactions in Informa’s ‘The Law of Yachts and Yachting’.

Leisure

James enjoys spending time with his family and a variety of sports. He also enjoys riding, walking and the outdoors generally.
