Career

Experienced in international arbitration and litigation. She handles a wide range of cross-border commercial disputes before international arbitral tribunals, as well as before the Singapore courts. She has acted for clients in ad hoc and institutional arbitration proceedings under SIAC, ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, UNCITRAL and ICSID Rules. Also experienced in arbitration-related court proceedings. She has acted for clients in setting aside proceedings, applications for anti-suit injunctions and other court applications arising out of ongoing arbitration proceedings. In addition to counsel work, Alessa also sits as an arbitrator.

Work Highlights

Matters of significance which Alessa has advised or acted for include the following:

  • An African parastatal body in Mauritius-seated SIAC arbitration proceedings. The dispute arose out of an affreightment contract which was governed by Mauritius law.
  • A Philippine conglomerate in the hospitality industry in SIAC arbitration proceedings. The dispute arose out of a share sale purchase agreement governed by Thai law.
  • The owner / operator of a data centre in London-seated LCIA arbitration proceedings against the design and build contractor. Irish law was the governing law of the contract.
  • The government of an African state in an application to set aside an investment arbitration award before the Singapore courts.
  • A Chinese construction entity in an application to set aside an ICC arbitration award before the Singapore courts.

Alessa has been described by clients in Legal 500 as a “very strong litigator with a great ability to assimilate detail and reframe it for the fight”. Legal 500 also says that Alessa “readily masters the detail of even the most complex disputes”.
