Career

Carlos del Razo is partner and head of the Sustainability and Environment Practice at ECIJA Mexico. He has more than 15 years of experience representing infrastructure projects and highly regulated industries, providing advice for obtaining and complying with permits and authorizations from the three levels of government, development of environmental audits, as well as attention and handling of environmental inspection procedures. He also coordinates administrative litigation matters, in the design and execution of litigation strategies related to environmental and energy regulations.

He has been recognized by the international rankings Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 for the quality of his environmental practice. Among his most outstanding professional achievements are, having avoided, together with other lawyers and complainants, the modification of the Mexican official standard that regulates the quality of fuels (NOM-016-CRE-2016, which could have been significantly harmful to the environment), having advised on environmental impact assessment matters to the largest wind farm in Latin America, in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, and having served, for more than 10 years, as a member of the National Advisory Committee for Environmental and Natural Resources Standardization (COMARNAT).

Carlos is the Chairman of the Environment and Energy Commission of the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA) and serves as First Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Academy of Environmental Impact (AMIA), the most important association in this field nationwide.

He holds a law degree from Universidad de las Américas A.C., a master’s degree in Environmental Law and Policy from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, and a specialist degree in energy management from EGADE Business School, Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, with a stay at Seoul National University (SNU).

Finally, Carlos is a professor of Energy Law at UNAM Law School, where he lectures “Energy Transition” and “Legal Principles of Carbon Reduction in the Energy Sector” and has taught Environmental Law at Universidad Anáhuac del Sur.

He is the author of several publications, including refereed articles and books, on environmental and energy transition issues. He has also been director of undergraduate dissertations at ITAM, UNAM and UDLA and referee of academic articles for specialized journals, published by the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas de la UNAM.
