Career

Espen is one of the leading associate lawyers at Zacco, an expert in trademark and patent law as well as emerging technology. He is able to advise clients on a range of IPR related work. He takes a commercial and practical approach in securing client’s rights including assisting with assessment and clearance in potential markets, and registration and prosecution of rights both within Norway and beyond. He advises on strategy, new filings, oppositions and general enforcement as well as Zacco’s delivery of an ongoing watch service for relevant IP. He is also a skilled online brand and domain right strategist, supporting multiple clients with acquisitions and domain registrations. Recent years have increasingly seen Espen also asked to assist with legal issues related to domain names and disputes, successfully achieving amicable settlements for those where it was necessary to enter the court system.

An expert in IP portfolio management, helping organisations to align their current and future rights to their general branding strategy. He works closely with clients to develop a detailed understanding of their portfolio needs, identifying where efficiency or costs can be improved upon and ensuring that the portfolio structure is suitable for its intended purpose.

His clients include a cross section of Norwegian and international firms, of all sizes, operating within Food Tech, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and Fashion, Electronics, Leisure Equipment, Automotive, Mechanical Engineering and Construction, among other areas.

Espen started his career as an examiner investigating cases for the Norwegian Board of Appeal for Industrial Property Rights (KFIR), becoming secretary for the Mediation Board for Employee Inventions, and later a legal advisor for the University of Oslo, with each role offering insight into the idea and innovation creation process. This has given Espen a practical understanding of how IP is developed and used within different organisations, insight that he uses to secure and enforce his client’s rights.
