Mr Stefan van Rossum
Finance & Restructuring: Finance, Insolvency & Restructuring
Stefan is a seasoned finance and restructuring lawyer and head of our restructuring and insolvency practice. His work ranges from corporate lending, property finance and restructurings. His experience and training as a finance lawyer provides him with a profound understanding of the financial drivers of restructurings and the ability to prepare and negotiate the relevant documentation himself. That skillset sets him apart from insolvency lawyers that are trained as insolvency practitioners. His practice ranges from structuring and drafting finance documents and negotiating and documenting financial restructurings.
Stefan’s pragmatic and solution driven approach has gained him a loyal client base ranging from the major Dutch banks, several leading international banks and some of the world’s largest distressed debt investors.
Stefan regularly publishes in the field of finance and restructuring and sits of the editorial board of HERO, an only legal journal focusing on restructuring and debt revovery.
He started with Van Doorne in 1993 and made partner in January 2002. Stefan worked in the Van Doorne London office from 2001 until July 2004, which he headed from 2002 until his return to Amsterdam in July 2004.
English and Dutch
Stefan is a member of the Dutch Association of Insolvency lawyers (INSOLAD), INSOL Europe and the Turnaround Management Association.
Stefan attended VU University Amsterdam and the Università degli Studi di Bologna. Stefan further completed the Finance and Securities postgraduate program of the Grotius Academy (cum laude) and the Insolvency law (INSOLAD) post graduate program.
Angelique Thiele and Stefan van Rossum head the practice at Van Doorne, which is a strong choice for Dutch, German, UK and US banks, as well as Dutch and international non-bank lenders. The firm has an excellent reputation for real estate and development finance transactions, with Thiele leading a 12-strong team dedicated to this area. Senior associate Babette Vos has experience acting for banks and loan funds with a particular focus on hotel financings, whereas Estelle van Heerden mainly represents insurers and non-bank lenders in this space. Elsewhere, the group is well-placed to handle matters involving leveraged finance, corporate lending, asset-based finance, loan portfolio sales and debt restructuring. Alternative finance specialist Jelmer Baukema is also noted.
Van Doorne‘s borrower-side practice is well-placed to advise Dutch and international investors, public sector entities, and companies active in the transport, energy and retail sectors, among others. Real estate and development finance is a particular strength for the team, due in large part to the specialisation of Angelique Thiele. She leads the practice alongside the firm’s restructuring and insolvency head Stefan van Rossum, whose expertise includes leveraged finance, project finance and asset-based lending. Further reflective of the team’s abilities, Roel Botter has a strong track record in Dutch healthcare finance transactions.
The recent partner promotions of Joost Volkers and Jelmer Baukema has bolstered the offering of Van Doorne’s finance and restructuring practice. The team advises on both contentious and non-contentious matters, with a focus on large-scale transactional restructurings. The firm’s litigation department has a track record advising on professional liability claims, and the restructuring expertise of the firm’s senior partners is accredited to their strong finance background and an increased capacity for complex creditor and financing arrangements. The team is regularly engaged by hedge funds, financial institutions and distressed debt investors, often concerning cross-border mandates. Practice head Stefan van Rossum acts on both the lender and borrower side of financial restructurings, and Jelmer Baukema was promoted to partner in January 2023.
