asb law LLP's aviation practice is best known for advising on the acquisition, sale and leasing of aircraft, engines and parts, as well as drafting maintenance, repair, support, charter, ground-handling, joint venture, IT and intellectual property contracts. On the contentious side, accident and product liability claims are a particular specialism, in addition to transactional and operational aviation disputes. Air Charter Service, Avtrade and several national insurers form part of the client portfolio, with Quadrant Systems being a recent addition. During 2017, the department went through a restructure and is now able to offer alternative pricing options involving retainers, fixed fees and staged pricing, as well as business risk assessment advice. Head of aviation Alina Nosek, who specialises in transactional and commercial matters, aviation disaster consultant Tim Brymer and dispute resolution solicitor Simon Amos are the key individuals. In a recent highlight, Nosek assisted VAS Aero Services with the sale of a used engine to an Israeli company. Daniel James joined in May 2018 from Stevens & Bolton LLP.

The aviation practice at Shoosmiths LLP handles cross-border transactions for aircraft, engines and helicopters in Europe and the US, as well as advising banks and investors on deal financing. Partner Martin Fleetwood and associate Sarah Fairweather further specialise in the application of the Aircraft Protocol to the Cape Town Convention, in addition to other security interest protections available to lessors and financiers. Team lead Chris McClure assisted key client Swiss International Air Lines with the multi-million-pound leasing of Airbus A319 aircraft from Clariden Aircraft Leasing, and represented the same client again in the termination of a lease of an Airbus A330 from GECAS for operational reasons. Other team members to note in Southampton include partner Joanne McGuinness and associate Emily Stocker. Manchester Airport, Blue Islands, National Air Traffic Services and Thomas Cook can also be found in the client base.

Stevens & Bolton LLP's 'excellent' aviation department 'is very quick to respond and provides thorough advice and good value for money'. The team is best known for engaging in international aircraft and engine transactions and air charter matters, as well as litigation concerning supply, repair and maintenance, aircraft management, ownership, insurance claims, fraud, leasing and financing disputes. Recent highlights include the advice provided to Royal Aero on leasing engines to Russia, Ukraine, China, Mauritania, Germany and the US, as well as the representation of an aircraft management company in a maintenance dispute with the owner of a corporate jet. Bellinger Asset Management, Eastern Airways, Emirates and Gama Aviation are other key clients. Litigator and asset recovery expert Richard Mumford serves as team lead. Daniel James joined asb law LLP in May 2018.

The aviation department at Machins Solicitors LLP in Luton focuses on corporate and commercial matters, including transactions, contractual work, and leasing and finance for aircraft, business jets, engines and helicopters.
