Acting for clients across a range of industries, Baines Wilson LLP’s ‘very professional and thorough’ team provides ‘rock-solid’ corporate and commercial advice. On the corporate side, the team has particular expertise in handling M&A instructions, while international distribution, agency and licensing agreements form the bulk of the firm’s commercial workload. ‘Very good’ associate Kate Parker and ‘insightful and very knowledgeable’ team head Andrew Hill, who frequently deals with acquisitions and disposals and ‘provides pragmatic and commercially sound advice in a clear manner’, advised on the sale of the entire issued share capital of ICT Reverse to EcoAsia Technologies, and acted on the sale of the entire issued share capital of the Carlisle-based electrical installation service provider Meldrum to VINCI Energies. Founding partner John Wilson acts for a wide range of businesses, from family-owned companies to large multinationals.

‘Providing sound advice and a fantastic level of service’, Burnetts is particularly rated for its strength in transactional work, which frequently stems from education, transport, nuclear, IT and tourism sector clients. The ‘pragmatic’ team advised Carlisle College on a part B merger with Newcastle College including the transfer of staff, students, property and contracts. In an illustration of its tourism industry capabilities, it assisted Best Northern Hotels with the sale of the Crown Hotel in Cumbria. ‘Very knowledgeable and responsive’ IT and IP expert Vaughan Jones (who is ‘sharp as a razor’) took on the role of team head following John Noctor’s retirement in December 2017. He works closely with ‘approachable and trustworthy’ M&A expert Michael Walby, who advised Amsric Foods on its acquisition of 22 KFC franchise stores across the South of England from KFC Limited, and assisted the H&H Group with two insurance broking transactions.

Cartmell Shepherd's corporate team frequently works in conjunction with the firm’s employment and property departments to guide clients through a wide range of corporate and commercial matters, including M&A, restructurings, management buyouts and contractual matters. Recent highlights include advising a client on the sale of a hotel by way of a share sale, acting for the purchaser on a management buyout of an electrical engineering company, and assisting a large national accountancy firm with the restructuring of its business and several acquisitions. The practice also advised a food nutrition company on the sale of its business to a national organisation, and acted for the seller on the sale of shares in a veterinary practice.
