Career

Bernardo is a partner of the Gonzalez Calvillo based in our Mexico City’s office and member of our M&A and Banking and Finance practice areas. He has over 20 years of experience in both private and public offerings of securities in Mexico and abroad, advising issuers, investors, underwriters, holders (including Retirement Fund Managers – AFORES), intermediaries, rating agencies and consulting firms, including in the offering of corporate bonds, government securities offerings, development capital certificates (CKDs), Real Estate Investment Trusts (FIBRAs), Energy and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (FIBRAs E), securitizations of various types of assets (such as automotive, mortgage and payroll loans, equipment and machinery leases, and infrastructure projects and others), and ESG bonds. He also has experience on complex domestic and cross-border transactions, mostly related to financing and structured finance, as well as in joint ventures, strategic alliances, corporate restructurings, and mergers and acquisitions of highly regulated sectors and industries.

His experience also includes representing and advising financial entities, such as private and public banking institutions, and other companies on financial regulatory matters in Mexico. Prior to joining GC, he was a member of the legal teams at Value Grupo Financiero and Banco INVEX.

Bernardo holds a law degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, as well as an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and a Certificate in Business (WBLC) by The Wharton School, both in Philadelphia, PA. He also worked as an international associate in the New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP from 2014-2016.

The team at Gonzalez Calvillo  handles all manner of capital markets’ matters, working with government agencies and self-regulating organisations (such as the Mexican Stock Exchange), as well as corporates, to handle Mexican and international securities’ offerings, and advise on financings. The practice represents both issuers and holders of securities such as FIBRAs, FIBRAs E and CKDs; recent work highlights include representing Bursamétrica Casa de Bolsa before the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores, challenging the imposition of administrative fines. Working on an equal partnership basis, the team’s four partners co-lead: José Victor Torres Gómez who is experienced in complex cross-border transactions, financing and securities; co-managing partner José Ignacio Rivero Andere; Bernardo Reyes Retana, who focuses on advising AFORES, FIBRAs and FIBRAs E; and Daniel Guaida who has particular expertise regarding the structuring of publicly traded private equity funds. Since publication, both Torres Gómez and Guaida have left the firm (effective April 2024), subsequent to which the firm has announced an agreement to merge into Spain’s Pérez-Llorca.

The banking and finance practice at Gonzalez Calvillo excels at commercial lending, acquisition financing, project finance and regulatory banking work, regularly advising fintechs, domestic and international banks, and investment funds. Recent work highlights include advising Grupo Crédito Maestro on a $65m financing granted by Banorte; and assisting Banco Bradesco with the purchase of shares issued by Ictineo Plataforma, a popular financing entity. The team is led by four partners: José Victor Torres Gómez has vast experience as lead counsel in complex cross-border transactions; Bernardo Reyes Retana K specialises in both private and public offerings of securities, advising issuers, investors, underwriters, and credit agencies; José Ignacio Rivero Andere is experienced at working with non-bank financial institutions; and Daniel Guaida advises on fintech and regulatory technology matters. Senior associate Jacinto Avalos provides key support. Former partners Juan Manuel Sancho Rodrigo and Jaime Cortés left the firm in December 2021 and January 2022 respectively. Since publication, both Torres Gómez and Guaida have left the firm (effective April 2024), subsequent to which the firm has announced an agreement to merge into Spain’s Pérez-Llorca.
