Position

Michael advises employers and trustees of occupational pension schemes on all aspects of pensions law as well as dealing with pensions issues on corporate transactions. Michael also provides legal advice to pension providers and other pension professionals. Michael’s experience includes: day to day advice to pension scheme trustees on their powers, duties and obligations, scheme funding negotiations including implementing new funding structures,  advising employers on proposals to reduce or better manage their pension scheme liabilities, advising trustees and employers on the implications of corporate transactions and group restructuring, drafting trust deeds and rules and other documents for pension schemes and advising employers on their UK pensions obligations including consulting employees, automatic enrolment and the requirements on staff transfers.

Trained Wragge & Co; qualified 2000; pensions team Wragge & Co 2000-03, associate 2003-09; partner and head of pensions Gateley 2009 to date.

Languages

German (to A-level).

Member

Association of Pension Lawyers; former chair (and still committee member) of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association, West Midlands Group.

Education

Tanfield School, County Durham; University of Birmingham (LLB Law (2:1); Legal Practice Diploma (distinction)).

Leisure

Michael supports Sunderland AFC. He also enjoys cycling, skiing, travel, cooking (and eating), music, films.
