Career
Matthew Schnall is a versatile tax lawyer who has more than 25 years of experience representing clients in complex tax matters, including tax controversies, transactional planning, administrative rulings and tax regulatory compliance. He has extensive experience with corporate and partnership tax issues, international taxation, state and local taxation, investment management, real estate, and reporting and withholding.
Mr. Schnall’s transactional work includes tax advice on corporate mergers and acquisitions, spin-offs and split-offs, equity and debt financings and lending transactions, real estate investments and developments, registered and private investment funds, and business liquidations, restructurings, and workouts. He handles controversies involving federal income, employment and estate taxes, retirement plans, and state income, corporate, sales and use, and property taxes, as well as constitutional issues.
Mr. Schnall has represented clients in tax litigation before the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal and First Circuits, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He also practices before various state trial and appellate tribunals, including an extensive practice at the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board.
Professional Activities
Mr. Schnall is an Adjunct Professor in the Boston University Law School Graduate Tax Program and speaks frequently on topics about federal, state and international taxation.
Mr. Schnall is a member of the Boston Tax Forum; the American College of Tax Counsel; the Tax Sections of the American Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association; the International Fiscal Association; the Tax Section and the State Tax Committee of the Boston Bar Association; the Federal Circuit Bar Association; and the Tax Section of the Massachusetts Bar Association.
