Career

As a litigator with a broad corporate, commercial (including automotive) and securities litigation practice, Shan has notable experience in advising and acting as counsel in cases involving breach of directors’ duties, shareholders’ disputes, securities litigation involving stock market manipula­tion and insider trading, contractual disputes, and negligence lawsuits. He also has experience in international and domestic commercial arbitration. He frequently appears in cases before the High Court and the appellate courts in Malaysia. He has also appeared as lead counsel in arbitration proceedings at the AIAC and SIAC. Leading legal rankers have ranked and described him:

• Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2023 ranks Shan as one of the few “Leading Individual’ in Dispute Resolution. He has been described, among others, “a very experienced and reliable litigator”;  “formidable figure both in and out of the courtroom”; “his “tactical” delivery always gives us the assurance that we are well protected with his strategic advice’.” He is one of the few included in the recent edition of the 2022 Legal 500’s Arbitration Powerlist (South East Asia Region).
• Chambers Asia-Pacific 2023 ranks Shan in Band 4 (Dispute Resolution) and has been described, among others, “…very dedicated, responsible and proactive in his tasks in handling our matters” and “…adept at distilling the issues with clarity”.
• Asialaw Profiles 2023/2024 ranks Shan as a “Distinguished Practitioner”. In 2021, he was recognized as “highest rated lawyer to work with” for Dispute Resolution (Malaysia) Asialaw Client Service Excellence 2021.
• Benchmark Litigation 2023 ranks Shan a “Litigation Star” and described Shan as “able to articulate his thoughts clearly and persuasively for pragmatic solutions”.

Shan co-authored, among others, the chapter on Proceedings against Directors in Law and Practice of Corporate Insolvency in Malaysia (Sweet & Maxwell Asia); the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia, Companies Commission of Malaysia Act 2001 (Act 614); the Malaysian Chapter on Fundamental Principles & Interim and Precautionary Measures, Compendium of Worldwide Enforcement of Foreign Judgment (Multilaw); Private Wealth & Private Client Review (The Law Reviews) and has contributed to the Malaysian Civil Procedure (Sweet & Maxwell Asia).
