Career

Dan is a Partner at Simpson Millar and has been with the firm since 2010.

He specialises in many areas of education law, including school admissions, exclusions and Special Educational Needs. He is also very experienced at using judicial review to challenge decisions made by public authorities, or their actions or inactions.

In addition, Dan works across many community care cases with a particular emphasis on children, and works closely with many non-government organisations and charities to achieve the best outcomes for his clients.  He also undertakes cases which involve challenging wider policies in these fields.

In 2018, the Legal Aid Practitioners Group honoured Dan with the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year award for his work in children’s rights.

Leisure

Dan enjoys running, cycling, kayaking and swimming.  He recently stepped down after many years as a governor (and Chair of Governors) at his local infants’ school.

The practice expanded in September 2022 with the arrival of Rachel Scales, who has acted in a number of judicial review proceedings against local authorities concerning insufficient educational provisions for children with special educational needs.
