Position

Joanna is a barrister specialising in International Criminal Law with a focus on Transnational Crime, Terrorism and International Human Rights Law. She works on international cases representing states, non-state actors, international organisations, NGOs, victims, and individuals before various international courts and UN quasi-judicial bodies, as well as on lobbying and advocacy on policy matters relating to crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.

Joanna is currently involved in several international high-profile matters, including advising the Panel of Experts of the Organisation of American States on Venezuela, appearing for the defendants before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in the Hague and advising on crimes perpetrated by Russian forces in Syria and Ukraine.

Joanna is Qualified to accept Public Access instructions.

Career

Before joining the Bar, Joanna has, for over ten years, advised international organisations such as the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Organisation of American States (OAS), the Rule of Law Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat; NGOs; non-state actors and victims of crimes against humanity, war crimes, terrorism and genocide in over 20 conflict situations worldwide.

In addition to her expertise in law, Joanna’s skills include leading investigations in ongoing conflict situations, including into terrorism funding in the Middle East, developing curricula and co-teaching courses on transitional justice and investigation, including at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy of the Harvard Kennedy School, engaging in institutional development and advocacy work.
