Career

Claes has over 30 years of experience advising on a range of legal matters within both trademarks and designs. His specialist expertise with EU trademarks has seen him act as a strategic advisor to some of the most recognisable brands in the world, managing multiple trademark portfolios and developing protection and enforcement strategies in line with their current needs and potential future markets. An expert in trademark law, he is often successful in overturning cancellation and oppositions actions against his clients. He is considered by many organisations to be an integral part of their trademark and branding strategy, able to advise on the most practical methods for securing and defending their rights.

Claes joined Zacco in 2001, but prior to that he worked as trademark responsible within a Swedish industrial company and as an examiner at both the Swedish Patent Office and the OHIM, now the EUIPO, where he held the position of Head of Unit within the Opposition Division. This combination of private practice experience, alongside his expertise gained from working within legislative and decision making bodies, has given him an excellent understanding of IP rights best practice. A combination that sets him in good stead when representing clients in opposition cases and cancellations, as he is often quickly able to identify the important details of any potential rights issue.

Claes is also engaged as a lecturer within the area of EU Trademark Law and is active in the committee work of the International Trademark Association (INTA). His skills and expertise are regularly recognised by the World Trademark Review in their WTR 1000 and the Legal 500.
