  • Advising Clarks on a wholesale change to terms and conditions of employment impacting c.800 UK based employees at its head office and distribution centres.         • Successful in having a claim of whistleblowing and discrimination on the grounds of philosophical belief struck out at an early stage. This was a particularly topical and potentially precedent setting case as the claimant, who had resigned following complaints about his conduct, was asserting that his opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement constituted a philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010.
        • Advised a number of university clients in respect of issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. This has included advising universities on their ability to take advantage of the Government furlough scheme in light of its restrictive application to publicly funded organisations.

The request was submitted in accordance with the legislation and required the client to consider strategically how best to respond.           • Advised a well-known national charity on a very interesting project. The charity had over a period of time developed a non-core business based upon providing social housing – in effect, this arm of the organisation was a housing association/registered provider. The charity and the housing association arm agreed that the latter would separate from the charity and become independent.
          • Acted for a fire service since late 2019 on an ongoing, complex “trade dispute” with the trade union which represents the uniformed workforce – the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). The issue primarily concerns changes to shift patterns for firefighters, working hours when the employees work away from their home fire station, and obligations of firefighters to transport PPE.
