Called to the Bar in 2019

John has an interest in Crime and Family Law and is able to accept instructions in both areas.

Prior to his call, he was a Professor of Gastroenterology and still holds a licence to practice medicine. His knowledge of medical issues is often of relevance in both criminal and family cases.

John has a long-standing interest in the Law and was one of the first people to complete an LLM in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice in the early 1990s. He subsequently went on to become a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Conduct (ACLEC), which was responsible for widening rights of audience and defining the need for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). He decided to explore the benefits of arbitration as a solution to disputes and qualified as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He has appeared as an expert in court in both England and Wales and Ireland. He has also advised the General Medical Council on aspects of Fitness to Practice, including sexual offences.

John has an interest in history and writing and has published several books together with more than 300 papers in peer reviewed journals.
