Career

Ian is a Partner in the Corporate team, where he leads the firm’s growing Commercial Services practice.  Ian and his team help businesses protect their interests, deal with day-to-day legal challenges and understand the legal and regulatory environments in which they work.  He has particular expertise in charities law, data protection and intellectual property matters, and advises a number of prominent national organisations in these areas.

Also a restructuring and insolvency lawyer, Ian holds the R3 Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency and gives clients the benefit of over 16 years of experience advising office holders, secured and unsecured creditors, directors of insolvent companies, and businesses.  Ian has multi-jurisdictional experience, having formerly been a corporate bankruptcy lawyer with a leading firm in the United States, practising in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Ian has a passion for law and a remarkable ability to understand complex legal problems, immersing himself into the complexities of a case and using his experience to provide practical solutions for clients.

He thrives on helping businesses resolve their legal problems, understand what the law requires from them, and put together practical, usable commercial agreements which provide them with the legal protection they need to grow.

Based in Tunbridge Wells, the corporate and commercial team at Cripps regularly assists with cross-border mandates across a range of industries. The team is headed up by corporate law lead Julie Hughes, who handles healthcare and childcare instructions, and commercial law lead Kathryn Rogers, whose clients include digital media and data management agencies. In Tunbridge Wells, Cripps houses a ‘highly technical‘ team, which regularly assists clients with pre-insolvency matters in addition to pre-sale restructurings, solvent schemes of arrangements, and voluntary arrangements of companies. The practice advises a diverse client roster, which includes waste management, fintech, and manufacturing companies. Praised for her ‘attention to detail‘, Joanna Ford leads the team, often acting in claims of misfeasance and wrongful trading against directors, in addition to assisting companies in financial difficulty. With ‘considerable experience and knowledge‘, John Kirkwood focuses on the corporate elements of the insolvency process, and has a great deal of knowledge surrounding the selling and acquisition of insolvent businesses, while senior associate Hannah Proctor primarily focuses on contentious insolvency matters, often appearing before the High Court.
