The team led by founding partner Fabio Guzmán Ariza at Guzmán Ariza is praised for its ‘accessibility, responsiveness and level of service’. Of counsel Giselle Pérez, who joined the firm in October 2015, is recommended, and is in charge of the firm’s recently established environmental and business department; Christoph Sieger is also recommended. Recent work saw the team assist Netflix with the negotiation of contracts and agreements for the production of True Memoirs of an International Assassin (a film partly shot in the Dominican Republic); advise Fastenal Company on labour matters across all its operations in the country; and act for Mammoet Caribbean on the negotiation of a service agreement with the Dominican state, and on $100m-worth of contractual agreements with subcontractors. Other clients include Elof Hansson Trade, Schrader Camargo and Fuxion BioTech.
With eight offices around the country, Guzmán Ariza is in a strong position to deal with contentious real estate matters. Its dispute resolution team is led by Fabio Guzmán Ariza, and was bolstered recently by the arrival of a criminal and civil litigation specialist, of counsel Stanly Hernández. In one recent headline matter – indeed, it was broadcast live on national television – senior counsel Manuel Bonnelly successfully defended Soraida Abreu Martínez, the former wife of Dominican senator Félix Bautista, against corruption and money-laundering allegations brought by the Attorney General’s office. The firm is also particularly active in contentious labour cases, and recently assisted the former CEO of Grupo Roco Ki to rebuff an extraordinary appeal brought by former employers to have his substantial severance payments revoked. Other matters include representing Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort in both labour and civil litigation.
Guzmán Ariza’s IP department is active in various areas, including entertainment, manufacturing, technology and pharmaceuticals. Led by Fabio Guzmán Saladín, the team has been very active in the last year: it assisted Honda Motor Company with various trade mark registrations, and advised Groupe Canal Plus on registering the industrial design of its television decoder in the Dominican Republic. Other work saw Guzmán and associate Lidio Duval act for Dominican cigar company La Matilde on acquiring trade mark rights in the Republic and other countries, and assist the company with the relaunching of its brand. Clients include Lionbridge Capital, Senninger Irrigation, Fuxion Company and Amarin Pharmaceuticals Ireland.
Real estate and tourism
Fabio Guzmán Ariza’s ‘responsive, reliable’ department at Guzmán Ariza is praised for its ‘technically detailed work’. Supported by Julio Brea-Guzmán, Rubén García, Christoph Sieger and César Calderón, the team can call on expertise across the sub-sectors of the practice and counts Meliá Hotels International, Club Med, Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort and Blue Jack Tar on its roster of prominent tourism clients. Recent mandates saw the ‘very experienced’ Sieger advised Noval on a joint venture for the development of a $25m, 74-unit condominium project. The team also acted for Constructora del País on construction contracts for the development of the $65m Carnival Cruise port facility on the Republic’s north coast.
