With eight offices around the country, Guzmán Ariza is in a strong position to deal with contentious real estate matters. Its dispute resolution team is led by Fabio Guzmán Ariza, and was bolstered recently by the arrival of a criminal and civil litigation specialist, of counsel Stanly Hernández. In one recent headline matter – indeed, it was broadcast live on national television – senior counsel Manuel Bonnelly successfully defended Soraida Abreu Martínez, the former wife of Dominican senator Félix Bautista, against corruption and money-laundering allegations brought by the Attorney General’s office. The firm is also particularly active in contentious labour cases, and recently assisted the former CEO of Grupo Roco Ki to rebuff an extraordinary appeal brought by former employers to have his substantial severance payments revoked. Other matters include representing Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort in both labour and civil litigation.

Guzmán Ariza’s IP department is active in various areas, including entertainment, manufacturing, technology and pharmaceuticals. Led by Fabio Guzmán Saladín, the team has been very active in the last year: it assisted Honda Motor Company with various trade mark registrations, and advised Groupe Canal Plus on registering the industrial design of its television decoder in the Dominican Republic. Other work saw Guzmán and associate Lidio Duval act for Dominican cigar company La Matilde on acquiring trade mark rights in the Republic and other countries, and assist the company with the relaunching of its brand. Clients include Lionbridge Capital, Senninger Irrigation, Fuxion Company and Amarin Pharmaceuticals Ireland.

  • New regulation on unit-linked life insurance in Hungary

    Policyholders of unit-linked life insurance products pay an agreed sum for the unit-linked insurance to the insurance company, as a regular premium, or in one lump sum. These payments cover the life insurance component as well as the investment, administrative costs, contracting fee and the commissions. The "total cost charged" ("TCC") is an indicator – calculated in line with the rules of Hungarian insurance regulations – showing all costs charged on life insurance policies having a savings element, reflected as a percentage value.
