Career

Elizabeth is a tax attorney who, in recent years, has focused on criminal and civil tax defense and offense. Elizabeth spent the first eight years of her career in the Manhattan offices of two large international law firms, where she provided tax advice on a wide range of deals:

* international corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and restructurings;
* structuring financial instruments and financing vehicles, in and outside of the US;
* distressed asset workouts and bankruptcy;
* real estate transactions;
* structuring, syndication and workouts of natural resources (timber, electricity, and oil and gas); and
* planning for both ‘inbound’ (foreign into the US) and ‘outbound’ (US to offshore) transactions, investments and relocations.

Elizabeth joined the firm in 1998, where she used her transactional tax background to counsel wealthy families on their businesses and investments, later becoming their trusted advisor. After the US Department of Justice began pursuing UBS in 2007, Elizabeth selected and trained the Withers’ team to represent affected clients. Today, that tax investigations team has members based in 10 Withers’ offices and represents clients worldwide; this is now Elizabeth’s primary focus.
