Position

Manuel is a partner and head of our Intellectual Property (IP) Group in Spain. He is a well-known specialist in IP and pharmaceutical law and has acted in various landmark pharmaceutical patent and SPC cases in Spain (including Finasteride, Docetaxel, Drospirenone, Venlafaxine, HPV vaccine/Gardasil –acting for the University of Queensland and CSL-, amongst many others). He has wide experience of  patent litigation before the Spanish civil and administrative courts, including multi-jurisdictional proceedings, and gives strategic advice in international decisions regarding the manufacture and commercialisation of products in the context of the patent situation. He represented Oncostem, SL, in a patent/know-how and contractual action against CSIC.

Career

Manuel has advised many technology focused companies on intellectual property and trade secrets litigation, regulatory issues and contract law.  He has also advised life sciences and other technology-based companies in drafting technology transfer contracts (in the fields of pharmacy, biology, electronics and mechanics). His experience also encompasses commercial and corporate legal matters derived from joint ventures, due diligences and contractual work. Manuel has advised several Universities (University of Seville, University of Saragossa) , public  institutions (Fundación Progreso y Salud, Fibao, Sergas, etc.) and private biotech-entities on ownership and entitlement issues. He is an expert in legal advice, communications and appeals before the health authorities and litigations before the administrative courts related to pharmaceutical regulatory and medicine advertising as well as in legal and strategic advice regarding pharmaceutical agreements (including distribution, supply and manufacture, clinical trials). Before joining us in February 2006, Manuel was a partner at a Spanish law firm and at an international law firm.

Education

Manuel teaches commercial law, corporate law and intellectual property law at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He regularly lectures on intellectual property law and pharmaceutical law in Latin American countries and speaks at seminars organised by several universities, judicial schools and private institutions. He has written several books and publications on trademarks, patents and other subjects.
