The practice advises on the construction and commissioning of facilities with environmental impacts and has particular expertise in legislation and case law in areas including water, air emissions, protected areas and spillages. In recent highlights, the firm is assisting TMT International Observatory with the environmental issues arising from the construction of the $1.4bn thirty metre telescope in La Palma, as well as successfully representing waste management company Alansu in criminal proceedings related to the death of three people following the inhalation of toxic compounds.

The multi-disciplinary practice at Hogan Lovells International LLP is led by regulatory expert Santiago Garrido; Ana Castedo, who specialises in intellectual property disputes; Carolina Revenga, whose expertise lies in litigation and product liability; and Alex Dolmans, who focuses on corporate and M&A work in the sector. The team has a particular speciality in product liability, patent and trade mark infringement in the life sciences field. The department successfully represented DePuy International in an appeal against a court decision that found the client liable for compensation for alleged damage resulting from the use of its ASR XL Acetabular metal-on-metal hip replacement system. In another highlight, the firm advised LabCorp on the local aspects of its $1.2bn acquisition of Chiltern International Group, a leading provider of clinical trial solutions.

The team is advising renewable energy company Eolia on its expansion plan, and is assisting mining company Atlantic Copper with negotiating a power purchase agreement with a renewable energy company.
