Magnussen advices Norwegian and foreign companies within areas of business law, in their contact with public authorities and in negotiations and dispute resolution. He also has legal assignments for and advices public authorities and entities. Magnussen has been a judge for six years, during which he mediated and presided in more than 200 civil cases within a broad spectre of legal areas, and has an expertise within civil litigation.

Magnussen's main area of expertise is competition law and he is also team leader for our legal practice group for Competition and Procurement law. Magnussen has previously worked as Legal Director of the Norwegian Competition Authority, and over the last years been appointed Acting Director General of the Competition Authority in ongoing infringement cases. Magnussen is experienced in handling large and complex competition cases and has adviced in many cases before Norwegian and international competition authorities within different business areas. He also has experience from investigations and compliance work, advising in the establishment various forms of cooperation between companies, conducting legal review of companies' agreements and business conduct, and handling competition notifications of mergers and acquisitions.

Ola Haugen heads the practice at Wikborg Rein and has 'a prodigious command of the law'; clients also praise 'excellent lawyer' Kaare Andreas Shetelig (who 'does an excellent job'), and Ola Nisja who is 'outstanding both in and out of court and provides superb strategic advice'. Haugen recently acted for the Norwegian Armed Forces in two cases against Avinor relating to the transfer of Bergen and Trondheim airports to Avinor, and Dag Mjaaland represented Naftogaz in two international arbitrations relating to its gas sales contract with Gazprom and a transit contract. Norsk Gjenvinning, Troms Kraft and DNB are also clients. Mads Magnussen joined the group from his position as a District Court judge.

Wikborg Rein¬†substantially benefitted from the recruitment of¬†Mads Magnussen¬†in 2018 from his position as a District Court judge; he now leads the firm's practice and is described by clients as 'a brilliant, knowledgeable and service-minded lawyer'. The department also includes several highly regarded specialist counsels including deputy head¬†Eivind Stage,¬†Hanne Camilla Zimmer, who joined the group in 2017 from¬†Advokatfirmaet Hjort¬†and focuses on state aid and general EU law issues, and public procurement specialist¬†Alf Amund Gulsvik, who is 'highly knowledgeable¬†and provides great general counselling'. Recent highlights include acting for NorgesGruppen in an investigation by the Norwegian Competition Authority following a dawn raid relating to alleged anti-competitive behaviour, advising Transocean on the competition aspects of its acquisition of Songa Offshore, and assisting FSN Capital Partners with its acquisition of Saferoad Holding. Former practice head Jonn Ola S√łrensen is now a judge.
