Advokatfirmaet BAHR AS’s insurer-focused practice is ‘professional, efficient and truly exceptional’ across marine, non-life and life insurance. Clients include Zurich and Norwegian Hull Club; Tarjei Thorkildsen acted for the latter in two loss of hire claims brought by a ship charterer. The ‘always available’ Jan Jansen leads the group, which includes marine insurance litigator Atle Skaldebø-Rød, Peter Hammerich and Audun Nedrelid who handles financial issues.

Strong competitorDLA Piper advises a client base of international insurers including Chubb, AIG Europe, Allianz, Aspen and Zurich. The practice focuses on non-marine insurance claims and coverage disputes with expertise in D&O issues, professional liability matters and reinsurance disputes. Runar Hansen leads the department; other key names include financial specialist Alexander Plows and associated partner Camilla Julie Wollan, who is recommended for regulatory mandates.

At Advokatfirmaet Thommessen AS, department head Andreas Meidell has ‘high levels of business and legal acumen combined with a calm and reassuring demeanour and a proactive and pragmatic approach’. Meidell focuses on marine insurance and recently represented Norwegian Hull Club as lead insurer in a cover claim following a collision in the Gulf of Mexico. Henrik Hagberg and Trond Hatland are also names to note in the insurer-focused team.

Hans Kenneth Viga-Gerhardsen leads Wiersholm’s ‘top-notch’ team, which ‘understands the market better than most’ across marine, non-marine and professional liability insurance. Recent highlights include Erik Blaker representing Suez Fortune Investments in a loss of hire dispute against Norwegian Hull Club.

At ‘first-class firmWikborg Rein, practice head Anders Færden is advising Norwegian Broker on liability issues following the bankruptcy of Gable, and is assisting a hull insurer with issues surrounding the confiscation of a tank vessel. XL Catlin, Norwegian Hull Club and QBE are also clients. Christoffer Bergene is recommended for regulatory matters and Gaute Gjelsten (who is ‘excellent at settlement negotiations’) handles marine insurance disputes.

Arntzen de Bescheunderstands the core values of its clients’, which include Chubb and Gjensidige Forsikring. Practice head Atle-Erling Lunder is ‘an incredible personality’ and Kåre Moljordhas the professional credentials that the market needs’. Sven Iver Steen, professional liability expert Terje Granvang and Rune Njøs Jacobsen are also singled out.

With ‘many years of experience under one roof’, boutique firm Advokatfirma Kogstad Lunde & Co’s ‘service is no less than excellent’ thanks to ‘incredibly trustworthy and knowledgeable lawyers who consistently represent the client to the best of their ability’. The group, which solely advises insurers, is highly regarded for its personal injury expertise through the ‘extremely dedicatedTerje Marthinsen. Clients also praise Eivind Kogstad and Trond Werner Lunde.

At Advokatfirma Ræder DA, Jon Andersen, who handles maritime insurance matters, is ‘worthy of special praise for providing a first-class service to clients in the Norwegian market’. Department head Joakim Ulltveit-Moe focuses on professional liability issues. The group’s insurer client base includes Tryg Forsikring, Zurich and WR Berkley Insurance Norway.

Christian Kjellby Nesset, who ‘understands the technical issues’, heads the ‘highly professional’ department at SANDS following Klaus Henrik Wiese-Hansen’s departure to Advokatfirmaet Schjødt AS. Highlights included representing Basa-Huset in business interruption claims following a fire, and acting for Johnson Controls and Chubb in a professional indemnity issue.

Advokatfirmaet Simonsen Vogt Wiig is ‘recognised for its marine insurance expertise’ and is ‘one of the pre-eminent firms for cargo work’. Frithjof Herlofsenexpertly leads the group’ and is ‘a strong advocate and tactician’; he recently represented Gjensidige in a damage claim relating to a floating dock. Skuld, Zurich and Yara Insurance are also clients.
