Charitable fundraising in England and Scotland is to be reviewed during the course of this year.

In answer to a supplementary question on charitable collections during Cabinet Office questions on 19 January, Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office said:

'It seems to us that the current laws are outdated... They are not particularly effective at preventing fraudulent collections, yet they can already be very burdensome on legitimate charities. We want to reverse that to make the law easier for legitimate charities but more effective in controlling fraudulent collections.'

Meanwhile in Scotland, following a parliamentary motion brought by George Foulkes MSP calling for tougher regulation of face-to-face fundraisers, the Minister for Community Safety announced his intention to consult widely on this in 2011 and to draw up a new scheme by the end of the year.
