Whether acting for private individuals or multinational companies, Dentons is adept in all phases of tax controversy against the IRS, as well as state and local tax authorities. Indeed, it handles SALT disputes for some of the largest companies in the US. A recent example is a complex matter in Salt Lake County for Delta Airlines. The practice is led by Mark Loyd in Louisville, who has extensive experience at both state and federal level, and Gregory Rhodes in Birmingham, who has an extensive track record of acting as first-chair trial attorney in high-stakes federal and local tax litigation. Dentons handles a wide scope of issues on behalf of owners, contractors, suppliers, and design professionals, from project management and financing to litigation and alternative dispute resolution. The team is headed in St. Louis by Charles Vantine, who guides clients throughout all construction phases, and John Haug, who is engaged in the financing and development documentation of public and private projects. Dividing their respective time between New York and Short Hills, Philip White and Jonathon Jemison litigate and arbitrate construction disputes involving projects such as petroleum facilities, roads, sewers, and railways. San Diego’s Jae Park is also a seasoned litigator who tries cases concerning delays, disruption, extra work, and change orders. St. Louis-based Alexander McDonnell and Timothy Guntli comfortably represent clients from procurement to project completion. Clay Counts left the firm in 2024.

Dentons has expanded its presence in restructuring, insolvency and bankruptcy with the hire of specialist partners Jill Nicholson and Andrew McClain, along with counsel Dean Victor, to its Chicago office from Foley & Lardner LLP. Clay Taylor has also joined the Dallas office. The expanded team is now spread across multiple offices with particularly strong groups in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and Houston. The department is further noted for its experience in healthcare cases, along with financial services and insurance, real estate, energy, mining, automotive and manufacturing. Chicago-based Robert Richards is chair of the global department and has a focus on chapter 11 cases, distressed asset acquisitions and distressed loan purchases. Los Angeles partners Tania Moyron, chair of the global team’s US region, and Samuel Maizel, are prominent figures, especially in healthcare industry restructurings and bankruptcies.
