Nathan Rees

Testimonials

They put the relationship first and don’t take us for granted. They step up every time we need them to and have excellent technical capabilities. Not all legal teams are created equal and although some teams say they do these things – this one actually does!

Nathan Rees is a true sector and specialist area expert. His experience and thoughtful approach is much valued as a vital component of our property strategy and tactical activities. We seek out his input on an early engagement basis. Again, many lawyers try to offer this degree of “business partner” support and are absolutely hopeless at it – they simply are too “private practice” and don’t add the value they think they can. We have worked with hundreds of real estate lawyers over the years and Nathan is an exception in our legal panel and wider experience. He is a very good guy to have on speed dial.

Testimonials

The Shoosmiths team provided impeccable attention to detail in their work. They were also keen to dive in and understand the nature of the business and the specifics of the deal being negotiated rather than just drafting documents as I see many firms do. In my experience, this has been the key differentiator between excellent and just acceptable representation. It was a pleasure to work with someone who was truly on your team.

Fantastic corporate, banking and property departments.

I primarily worked with Philip Goldsborough and his team. Philip was extremely attentive and detail oriented. He got down to the details of the transaction and our long-term interests to make sure that we were negotiating the best possible deal for our firm.

Crime: fraud Tier 3

'Tenacious' and 'forthright' financial crime and fraud specialist Dan Stowers leads the team at Shoosmiths LLP, which combines high-profile white-collar defense cases relating to bribery, fraud, and money-laundering with regulatory compliance advice on behalf of corporations and their directors. Practice head(s):

Dan Stowers

Testimonials

In terms of corporate teams in the regions, some may share Shoosmiths’s corporate client base (although many do not) but what sets Shoosmiths apart is that alongside corporate clients facing prosecution, Shoosmiths also act in the top end prosecution of individuals.

Dan Stowers has over 20 years’ experience, much of which related to serious and complex fraud cases. He is friendly and approachable to clients, but tenacious with his opponents. Having worked with Dan, he has consistently proved to be a very strategic thinker with an incredible eye for detail. He is particularly effective during investigations and has managed to stop criminal investigations before his client has been charged.

The team working on my behalf had a strong team spirit resulting from being colleagues of several years standing. All of them had a professional attitude but combined that with a friendly and relaxed approach making difficult circumstances tolerable and very productive. The strong client /professional relationships developed over the five-year duration of the case made a significant contribution to the positive result achieved.

The partner I worked with is Dan Stowers. He is a straight-talking, forthright character with impressive legal experience which he combines with an admirable hardworking attitude. At the same time Dan has an approachable friendly personality. Dan was supported by Louise Walker who impressed me with her professional hardworking attitude, but also like Dan was very supportive and friendly.

‘I could not imagine finding a legal team that would perform technically as well as this one whilst creating and maintaining such a warm environment.

We also understand what this means; maintaining a positive, open culture, understanding the impact that work has on home life and vice versa, and promoting physical and mental health.

Our approach

Communication, consistency, and collaboration are very much the Shoosmiths way of achieving results; this applies to our diversity and inclusion ambitions as well. In practice this means that we consult with our colleagues on initiatives, e.g. through working groups, networks, and employee surveys, seek to maintain a consistent employee experience across Shoosmiths’ offices, and work closely with clients to ensure we meet their needs and identify areas of mutual interest.

We believe talent can come from anywhere, so we actively support initiatives that attract and support people into the legal profession who may not traditionally have had access. We work with external organisations to ensure we are reaching the widest audience possible, as well as on initiatives which contribute to our inclusive working environment.

The Lex 100 Verdict

Shoosmiths balances an 'impressive portfolio of clients with a great work/life balance'. The firm's network of offices across the UK allows trainees to 'experience regional life without ever compromising on work quality'. A 'friendly yet forward-thinking culture' prevails and there are 'great opportunities for progression' thanks to the firm's ambitious trajectory. 'If you are struggling to meet a deadline, your supervisor will try and find a solution', likewise there is 'no pressure of facetime – partners are genuinely concerned if you're working later than you should be'. Consequently, Shoosmiths has nabbed a Lex 100 Winner award for work/life balance. Some trainees feel that the salary is 'fairly average compared with the firm's competitors', in particular when considering the 'size and success of the firm over the past few years'. But 'you don't have to walk far to find a friendly face' at Shoosmiths; 'someone will always ask how you are or how your day is going'. When asked for their best moments so far, trainee responses ranged from 'being involved with the development of the firm's employee networks – LGBT+ and BAME' to 'leading a telephone negotiation with a solicitor on the other side of a transaction only one month into my first seat'. Conversely, 'quiet periods without much to do' and 'having to spend a number of hours in a deeds storage room' were singled out as the worst moments. On the plus side, there are a number of client secondments on offer which afford trainees the opportunity 'to see client priorities from the other side and to understand more how decisions are made internally'. For a firm in which 'every employee lives the firm's values and collaborates to give clients the best possible service', consider Shoosmiths.
