On December 7, 2015, the DOT announced the Smart City Challenge,
which invites cities nationwide to submit bold, data-driven ideas
for making transportation safer, easier, and more reliable in a
"Smart City." To showcase what is possible when
technology is used to connect transportation assets into an
interactive network, the agency plans to award up to $40M to one
winning mid-sized city (defined as city having population between
200,000 and 850,000) selected through the challenge. The winning
city will be announced in June 2016.
