Bowmans is building further market share with growth in ports and terminal sector work and commodities market engagements. It is also working closely with ship finance banks in insolvency and workout roles. It advised MSC Cruises and Kwa-Zulu Cruise Terminal on the development of Durban Cruise Terminal. Andrew Pike leads the ports, terminals and logistics team, while Craig Cunningham is head of shipping and logistics. Jeremy Prain and Mark van Velden are also key partners.

Webber Wentzel has a wide-ranging practice, with genuine strength across shipping, aviation, rail and road. The team is 'extremely knowledgeable and commercially aware, with wide contacts in the industry'. It is at the forefront of rail infrastructure in Africa and has acted in some of the largest admiralty cases in South Africa's history. It acted for Hollard Insurance in claims arising out of damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Irma to catamarans in the Voyage Charter fleet based in the BVI. Andre Bowley has 'a great legal brain and pays attention to detail', Patrick Holloway is 'a big hitter with vast experience' and Gavin Fitzmaurice 'responds quickly' and 'provides an efficient, legally accurate and commercially astute service'. Scott Edmundson is at the forefront of aviation and rail finance.

ENSafrica has an outstanding shipping, maritime and aviation finance practice, with an especially strong record in marine insurance, casualty and cargo arrest matters. It has 'a team of top-class attorneys' led by Tony Norton, 'a well-versed and respected member of the maritime industry'. Michael Tucker led the team that advised Time Charterers on MV Smart, which grounded and was wrecked at Richards Bay. Kate Pitman is another leading maritime lawyer and Sean Lederman is recommended for aviation finance. Senior associate Jacqui Kaufmann is also noted.

Norton Rose Fulbright is feted for its insurance-driven practice and is further developing its status in commercial shipping, customs and liability work. It is also increasingly active in rail infrastructure, cargo terminals and toll road concessions across Africa. Andrew Robinson heads the transport practice, which includes Malcolm Hartwell, who leads the shipping and casualty response group. Heather Manson heads the aviation department.

Shepstone & Wylie is a traditional leader in shipping and maritime with Shane Dwyer and Krish Reddy being two of the most experienced practitioners in the market.
