Personal injury and international personal injury.

Aman is a solicitor advocate and partner who specialises in international personal injury (IPI) claims and leads the public health group illness team, heading up a team of three solicitors, eight paralegals, trainee solicitors and support staff. Aman has supervised some of the largest and most complex group actions in the IPI team, including high-profile cases such as the infamous Costa Concordia disaster and the fatal Stoke Legionnaires Outbreak, and has successfully acted for thousands of clients who have suffered illness abroad, including those affected by the highly publicised Bahia Principe and Holiday Village group actions. He has also handled and concluded six figure settlements for those unfortunate enough to have suffered accidents whilst abroad, an area requiring expertise in cross-border litigation and jurisdictional understanding. As an advocate, Aman has concluded multi-million pound settlements in respect of both costs and damages at round table meetings. Aman has helped to create favourable conditions for clients following the LASPO law reforms through creating budgets, damages adjustments, drafting retainers and creating profit models. He has also appeared in scores of newspaper articles and news programmes, with the highlights being a live appearance on Sky News in respect of the Costa Concordia disaster and extended personal comment in the Daily Telegraph and other national newspapers. Aman is enthusiastic about diversity, leading initiatives to empower staff from minority groups, and also pushing this agenda in his role as a trustee for the IBS Network, Birmingham Settlement and Birmingham Tribunal charities. He also acts in an advisory capacity to other organisations.

The ‘passionate and experienced’ team at Irwin Mitchell, which is spread across its London and Birmingham offices, handles international claimant personal injury matters, and is the ‘firm you want on your side if you had a serious accident overseas’. It is acting for the families of 20 British citizens, and many injured victims, on a group action arising from the 2015 terrorist attack in Tunisia, and is representing a number of passengers and crew on claims against Costa Crociere following the sinking of the MS Costa Concordia in 2012. Department head Clive Garner is a ‘lateral thinker and solves problems through an indirect and creative approach’; he ‘knows international and supranational law like the back of his hand’. Also recommende are Philip Banks, who is a ‘very experienced cross-border litigator’, Demetrius Danas (‘seldom ruffled and always calm and polished’), Amandeep Dhillon, Suki Chhokar, Elizabeth Tetzner, and Jennifer Lund, who was recently promoted to partner and ‘fights hard for her clients’. Jim Morris joined Ashfords LLP in 2017.

Clive Garner (who ‘has a well-deserved and leading reputation as one of the foremost lawyers in this area’) heads Irwin Mitchell’s ‘ground-breaking and leading’ international personal injury unit in London and Birmingham, which represents clients in high-value catastrophic injury cases concerning aviation, bus and maritime accidents, as well as terrorist attacks. The ‘considerate, approachable and creativePhilip Banks attracts praise for his ‘calm and wise head, even in the most complex cases’; he acted alongside senior associate and ‘superb attorney’ Lesley Edwards for an English national involved in a car accident in France. Banks and Edwards also acted in a claim against the Motor Insurers’ Bureau on behalf of a man who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in Greece while driving a vehicle insured by a Greek company which went into insolvency before correct proceedings could be brought against it. Amandeep Dhillon (a ‘great and strategic team player’) successfully acted for a claimant who was diagnosed with haemolytic uraemic syndrome upon their return from an all-inclusive package holiday. Other key contacts include Suki Chhokar, who handles group claims against UK-based tour operators and defendants abroad; Elizabeth Tetzner; associate Cheryl Palmer-Hughes, who ‘builds very good trust with her clients and has good judgement’; and Jatinder Paul.

Irwin Mitchell is ‘the clear market leader’, according to one client. The Birmingham office has dedicated specialists covering serious injury, child abuse, workplace illness, industrial disease, public health, and international travel injuries. Clive Garner leads the team, which clients rate for its ‘extremely good strength in depth that few others match’. He is representing the families of 20 Britons killed in a terrorist attack in Tunisia as well as numerous injured individuals, and is acting for several claimants with regards to their claims following the sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012. Amandeep Dhillon leads the travel injury team and is currently advising a group of 300 claimants alleging they sustained an illness during a visit to Exeter, while serious injury head Stephen Nye assists clients with severe road traffic injury claims. Stuart Henderson, Hilary Wetherell, Philip Banks, Alida Coates and Luke Daniels, who heads the firm’s child abuse practice, are also recommended.
