Clinical Negligence Partner and National Head of Pro Bono for Irwin Mitchell, Richard oversees the Child Brain Injury Community engagement in London. He has a wealth of expertise in brain and spinal injury cases suffered by children and adults. He leads a team of 12 within the London Medical Negligence Department. Richard is passionate about rehabilitation and ensuring early recovery of interim payments to enable care and therapy and suitable equipment to be obtained at the earliest opportunity.
In the past year Richard has recovered in excess of £45 million and in past five years in excess of £114 million in damages for his clients. Recent highlights include:
- Agreeing a compromised settlement on liability 5 days into a 7 day High Court Trial, a case where the Defendant has previously made no offers to settle. The case involved a child who has suffered a brain injury as a result of hypoglycaemia.
- Recovering £4,875,000.00 for a young male who was misdiagnosed with rectal cancer.
- Recovering in excess of £22million for a child who suffered cerebral palsy due to delays at the time of her birth. This included a significant recovery for future loss of earnings and future holidays.
- Recovering in excess of £16 million for a child who suffered from life changing injuries following spinal surgery. The Claimant had a pre-existing disability impacting cognition and a limited life expectancy.
Richard takes a lead role on business development with particular focus on acquired brain injury work. He is often invited to speak at National Conferences aimed at clinicians and case managers on improving healthcare, learning from mistakes and access to early rehabilitation.
His cases are often reported in the national and local press. He has had a number of articles published in legal journals.

Richard is an AVMA Panel Member, Senior Litigator and Accredited Clinical Negligence Specialist with APIL. He provides regular training on best practice and guidance to medical professionals.
