A number of recent proposed acquisitions, starting with the proposed acquisition of shipping terminals in the United States by Dubai Ports World ("DPW"), have increased the visibility of the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States ("CFIUS") in the review and approval of acquisitions of U.S. firms by foreign enterprises. Shortly after the DPW deal, other high-visibility foreign acquisitions have been announced, including the $1.24 billion takeover of Doncasters, a British engineering group with U.S. holdings, by state-owned Dubai International Capital. Doncasters has nine plants in the United States which provide parts and supplies to U.S. defense contractors.
