On August 5, 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC or “Commission”) announced the establishment of the Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit (the “Unit”) within the Division of Enforcement to focus on accounting and financial reporting fraud matters as well as general misconduct in the accounting and auditing space. Timothy Zimmerman will lead the Unit. Zimmerman joined the Division of Enforcement in May 2026 after serving as deputy general counsel of an international accounting firm. To tackle these often technically challenging investigations, the Unit will be staffed by both attorneys and accountants with specialized skills related to financial reporting, accounting, and auditing in securities regulation. Division of Enforcement Director David Woodcock, who also joined the agency in May 2026, said the Unit “expands on the Division’s current and historical efforts to crack down on bad actors in the accounting and auditing profession.”
