Lee Ellis
Lee is a tax disputes lawyer in the KPMG Law team. He is also a centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) accredited mediator. He has over 15 years of experience of advising clients in respect of both contentious and non-contentious matters. Having begun his career with HMRC Solicitor’s Office, he was most recently a partner at Stewarts Law LLP where he played a leading role in the establishment of the firm’s tax disputes practice and lead their Direct Tax team. Lee is ranked in respected external directories including Chambers & Partners, where he is described as “strategically excellent, and provides incisive and practical insight and advice on difficult and complex tax matters". Lee assists corporates, across various industries/sectors, and individuals. He advises clients throughout the tax dispute lifecycle; from the identification and management of risk in respect of a potential dispute, to engagement with HMRC and achievement of settlement/resolution including through the use of ADR, to the management of proceedings before the Tax Tribunal and Higher Courts.

Colette Van Zyl
Colette sits in the award winning Tax Disputes team of KPMG Law which is currently ranked Tier 2 in Chambers and Legal 500 with an individual ranking as Up and Coming in 2024 and 2025. Colette is an experienced tax litigation solicitor with more than 20 years of UK litigation experience across a diverse portfolio of clients. Colette has significant appellate experience at all levels of appeal, including the Tax Tribunals, Administrative Court and up to the Supreme Court. Colette advises on all aspects of indirect tax litigation but has particular experience in advising on complex VAT disputes. Colette combines her technical expertise and extensive tax litigation experience to advise clients on all aspects of dispute resolution including tax appeals, penalty mitigation and judicial review. Most recently, Colette has successfully negotiated settlements with HMRC by way of alternative dispute resolution.
