Effective, professional and responsive’, Ferrere houses a ‘high-quality tax practice’, that is widely lauded for ‘putting the client first’. Department head Gianni Gutiérrez has ‘vast experience in the tax field’ and assisted Weyerhaeuser on the tax aspects of the sale of its timberland and manufacturing business in Uruguay to a consortium led by BTG Pactual’s Timberland Investment Group. The firm also shines in tax litigation and is representing several companies before the Supreme Court in a case challenging the constitutionality of a law that levies undistributed dividends with income tax. Other recommended names include ‘seasoned tax specialistAlberto Varela, newly promoted partner Isabel Laventure and senior associate María Laura Caffera.

The ‘relationship-driven’ fiscal practice group at Guyer & Regules finds favour for its ‘very broad scope of advice’, with clients highlighting its experience across the full range of tax consultancy, corporate support matters and tax litigation. Group head Juan Manuel Albacete is appreciated for his ‘great business and regulatory knowledge’ and recently advised the joint bookrunners on the tax-planning aspects of the Republic of Uruguay’s landmark $1.2bn global bond offering. On the regulatory side, Albacete assisted with the drafting of a new law concerning the tax treatment of derivatives. The group also benefits from a strong second line of senior associates including Juan Bonet (‘extremely capable’) and litigator Gastón Lapaz.

Bergstein maintains a broad tax practice, with specialist experience in both tax litigation and tax-planning matters; it also benefits from a standalone wealth management unit. Clients include domestic companies, high-net-worth individuals and major multinationals, with Amadeus IT Group, Boston Scientific and Velcro USA all on the group’s books. Domingo Pereira and Jonás Bergstein are high-profile figures in the market.

Responsive, professional and client-oriented’, Hughes & Hughes has ‘broad and deep knowledge in tax matters’. Led jointly by senior associate Fernando Barrios and public accountant Miguel Rocca, the team handles tax planning, transactional support matters and litigation. Representative clients include Fras-le, Grand Visual and Weltec Biopower.

Posadas, Posadas & Vecino distinguishes itself through its ability to ‘effectively provide an integrated solution for all the client’s needs’. International taxation is a sweet spot and the firm also acts on domestic matters and tax litigation. Zonamérica-based department head Raúl Vairo recently advised longstanding client BTG Pactual on funds-related tax matters.

In mid-2018, the former Fischer & Schickendantz became Andersen Tax & Legal Uruguay. While the longer-term effects of this development remain to be seen, the tax practice remains active and recently advised Breeders & Packers Uruguay on the tax aspects of its $135m acquisition by NH Foods. Although non-contentious work is the mainstay of the practice, the team also has experience in tax litigation. Juan Ignacio Troccoli is the name to note.

Olivera Abogados attracts excellent reviews for its ‘human touch’. Ricardo Olivera García co-leads the increasingly prominent team alongside newly promoted partner Andrés Hessdörfer, who is a ‘young professional with an admirable mastery of tax law’.     On 31 May 2019, Malta published the “Consolidated Group (Income Tax) Rules". The rules will come into force as from year of assessment 2020 and the rules introduce the concept of fiscal units into Maltese tax law .

    The Information Commissioner’s Office (‘ICO’) which is the UK’s data protection supervisory authority, recently issued a fine of £100,000 to EE Limited, a telecoms company operating in the UK.
