Position

Rui Patrício joined Morais Leitão in 1994 and became a partner in 2005. He is the Chairman of the firm’s General Meeting and was a member of the board of directors from 2008 to 2021. He coordinates the criminal and compliance department.

Career

Rui is one of the firm’s most experienced lawyers in the area of litigation, having developed in recent years the area of criminal and misdemeanours litigation, as well as having extensive activity in the area of compliance, integrity, investigation, civil litigation and sporadically in national arbitration.
In the academic circuit, from 1994 to 2006, he taught subjects in the areas of civil and criminal law at the Lisbon University School of Law and, from 2007 to 2013, as an Invited Professor at the Nova Law School – where he had returned in 2020.
He participates in multiple seminars and conferences, predominantly on criminal and misdemeanour legal themes in masters and postgraduate studies courses.
He is also an author and co-author of law books and articles, writing in several national newspapers. Rui Patrício co-edited the Portuguese Bar’s magazine in 2018 and 2019.

Memberships

Rui Patrício was a member of the Judiciary Superior Council between May 2009 and November 2011 and a member of the Corruption Prevention Council from April 2017 up to January 2020. Currently he is member of the OPCR’s executive board (Observatório Português de Compliance e Regulatório) and, as of September 2019, member of the board of Fundação de Arte Moderna e Contemporânea–Coleção Berardo, by appointment of the Ministry of Culture. He also co-coordinates BeNAC – Barómetro da Aplicação da Estratégia Nacional Anticorrupção (Observatório Permanente da Justiça – Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra), since May 2021.
