Ada Alegre Consultores is a legal and environmental management boutique, widely respected for its focus and expertise in the sector. Name partner Ada Alegre Chang brings 20 years' experience and know-how to the market, having formerly held the position of deputy director of the general directorate of Mining Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Also noted is senior associate Rasul Camborda, who is particularly well known in the mining sector. The firm acts for public sector entities and private companies, most notably from the mining, hydrocarbons, industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as advising on the environmental impact of major infrastructure projects. Alegre Chang also assists the government with environmental policy.

Environmental law boutique Delapuente provides an all-inclusive offering, from advice on compliance and risk assessments, through to defending companies before administrative bodies and obtaining permits for new or expanding projects. The practice is also recognised for its expertise in the regulatory aspects of protected natural areas and biodiversity considerations in relation to private investment projects, as well as dealings with local communities. Founding partner Lorenzo De La Puente is considered a pioneer in the field and has acted as a consultant to the Ministries of Energy and Mining, Environment, Agriculture and Production, as well as international finance bodies including the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); however, he now divides his time with a role as director of corporate, social and environmental matters at Minera Zafranal. Other members of the small but expert team include Luzmila Zegarra, who advises on environmental and health and safety in the mining and energy sectors, and Nicole Freire.

Miranda & Amado stands out for its 'superb service delivery' and dedicated practice, which excels across the complete range of environmental work, from transactions and projects, including regulatory compliance, to administrative sanctioning proceedings and litigation. Alberto Delgado leads a small team of specialist associates, among whom senior Alberto Ventura Rivas stands out for his experience. The team provides ongoing advice to Repsol on environmental compliance and commitments concerning operational matters concerning La Pampilla oil refinery, and acts for Engie Energía Perú (part of GDF Suez Group) on all its environmental needs in relation to the operation of its hydroelectric and thermodynamic generating plants. Transportadora de Gas del Perú and Clorox are also clients.

Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados is 'first class' and 'highly specialised' in environmental law, its standalone team having amassed a client portfolio that 'furnishes them with great experience.' The practice handles all main tranches of work: transactional, regulatory and litigious, with recent instructions including: environmental advisory to Sumitomo Corporation on its $48m acquisition of a 5% interest in Minera Yanacocha; acting for Minsur in administrative sanction procedures concerning alleged environmental non-compliance; and acting as legal expert in a high-stakes ICC arbitration. Star individuals include Jenny Caldas, a 'great attorney' who 'provides sharp advice in every case she handles'; Francisco Tong, who has 'great professional versatility and a lot of patience'; of counsel and 'great speaker' Úrsula Zavala;   and recently made up partner Francisco Barrios and senior associate Juan Carlos del Busto , who are both highlighted by clients.

'An extensive team' at CMS Grau  enjoys a 'good reputation in the market for environmental matters' and offers a 'high level of professionalism' along with 'customised, easy-to-understand advice'. Despite being one of the market's longest-established practices in this field, it continues to grow, attracting a number of new clients including Minera Las Bambas, minig-explosives manufacturer FAMESA and Spanish water company Copasa, which join the likes of Kimberly Clark,  Compañía de Minas Buenaventura and Minsur on an impressive client roster. 'Highly-respected' practice head Vito Verna 'knows the sector' and is  appreciated for his 'understanding of our business and sensitivity to the risks or problems that arise'. Paola Carbajal is also recommended.

Estudio Echecopar member firm of Baker McKenzie International is leading the way in climate change advice with its specialist environment and climate change practice group. It is advising BHP Billiton Foundation on the financing and other aspects of its REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiative in the Amazon Rainforest, while traditional environmental work includes acting for Innova Ambiental, the public cleaning concessionaire for Lima, on regulatory requirements. The firm's multi-disciplinary team is led by head of natural resources, Valentin Paniagua Jara , a 'very pragmatic professional with clear ideas', while other key members include public law expert Jorge Danós, who is 'excellent'; and senior associate Alexandra Carranza Bendezu, a climate change specialist who is highlighted for the quality of her advice.

At Hernández & Cía. Abogados, last year's partner-level lateral hires  have bedded-in well: the quality of work and results achieved by Luis Felipe Huertas del Pino and Miyanou Dufour 'differentiates the firm', comment clients who note they are very hands-on and 'focused at all times to develop and improve the capabilities of the team'. Alongside the experience of Luis Rodríguez-Mariátegui and with criminal law input from Gonzalo del Río , it is a formidable team. The practice is advising Proctor & Gamble Perú on the environmental impact of its manufacturing plant, including sanctioning proceedings for alleged hazardous waste infringements. Reflecting the firm's strength in the mining sector, it also acts for Rio Tinto Minera Perú, Gold Fields La Cima and Compañía Minera Antapaccay among others. At associate level, Lorena Tanji is praised by clients and the practice also welcomed fisheries and environmental law expert Jennifer Vilches May 2019 arrival, following completion of her LLM in environmental law

Lazo & De Romaña Abogados continues to gain market share, landing a raft of new clients such as Tahoe Resources, Empresa Minera Los Quenuales, Alicorp and Camposol, which join an existing high-calibre roster that includes Repsol, Marcobre and Lima Airport Partners (LAP). The firm advised the latter, the concessionaire of Lima's Jorge Chavez Airport on the environmental impact assessment for the proposed $1.5bn airport expansion; and assisted environmental enforcement agency, OEFA, on new regulations to allow infringers the option to undertake environmentally-friendly projects instead of paying fines. The lack of partner-level leadership in the practice appears to be no obstacle, with clients applauding the 'real experience' of a team that has an 'excellent network of contacts at industry level and within government entities'. The co-heads of the practice are 'outstanding member of the team' Juan Manuel Pazos and Julián Li, who has an 'extensive legal knowledge of the field'.

Rubio Leguía Normand 's strong mining team has equal expertise in environmental law, where head of practice Xennia Forno is 'probably the most experienced lawyer for the mining sector' and delivers advice with 'great timing and quality'. However, the team's expertise is not limited to mining-related environmental matters, as evidenced by a broad variety of instructions from an impressive client base, where 'great young lawyer' Miguel Angel Soto, a senior associate, often takes the lead.  His caseload includes acting for Chinese tech-company Huawei on all the environmental and safety requirements for its business activities in Perú, and he is currently leading advice to the national government on its environmental regulation policies following recommendations from the OECD. The practice will also benefit from the environmental expertise of new partner Diego Grisolle, hired from García Sayán Abogados in February 2019.

Clients of energy and regulatory boutique Santiváñez Abogados regard the firm as 'one of the best', citing its 'knowledge, experience, business approach and personal availability'. Practice head and leading market figure Karim Kahatt is dedicted to the sector full-time; he leads a team of capable associates among whom Cecilia Azerrad stands out for her experience and focus. Beyond its obvious strength in the mining and energy sectors, the practice group has a good track record in conetntious administrative matters; having successfully defended Compañía Minera Quechu in sanctioning proceedings before environmental agency OEFA, recently, itis now defending Electro Sur Este before the same authority. In non-contentious matters, the team provides environmental advice to agroindustrial company Sunshine Export and steel manufacturer SIDERPERU, while Anglo American is also a client.

García Sayán Abogados advises its enviable mining and energy client base on the entire spectrum of environmental issues, including sanction prevention audits and the criminal aspects of regulatory infringements. It's 'very well structured team' is highlighted for its technical knowledge, professionalism and customer service, and recent mandates include acting for Minas Buenaventura in an administrative sanctioning procedure before OEFA. The team also advises companies from the industrial and agriculture sectors on regulatory requirements. Alberto Varillas now heads the practice alone following the departure of co-head Diego Grisolle to  Rubio Leguía Normand.

Muñiz, Olaya, Meléndez, Castro, Ono & Herrera Abogados' practice head, Renato De Vettori, formerly worked at the environmental affairs departments of both the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Ministry of Production. He leads a small but capale four-strong practice that focuses on advisory and sanctioning defence work; key support comes from Milagros Mejía. A number of client gains over the past year include significant companies in the mining, agroindustrial, energy and manufacturing sectors, while instructions included acting for a multinational chemical company on high-value administrative sanctioning proceedings.

Estudio Olaechea's José Antonio Honda is well-versed in environmental law, particularly in relation to the environmental aspects of corporate transactions and infrastructure projects within the mining, energy and ports sectors. Maersk Group subsidiary APM Terminals Callao - the concessionaire of Peru's main port, Terminal Norte Multipropósito (TNM) -  is a key practice client; the team has advised it on  multiple issues during the past year, including advice on obtaining and implementing the necessary environmental authorisations for the refurbishment of TNM’s Pier Seven. Senior associate Stephanie Límaco , who returned from a pacement at WilmerHale 's London office, also participates in the sector.

The 'very efficient' practice at Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados is primarily focused on environmental support for transactions in the finance, extractive, manufacturing and agricultural sectors. A broad caseload includes advising the sizeable syndicate of bank lenders on the social and environmental aspects of Marcobre's $900m Mina Justa mining project. Non-transactional work included assisting Inca Rail with regard to the implementation of -and compliance with- new trransport sector environmental regulations. Key adviser Vanessa Chávarry was promoted to counsel and co-leads the practice, which is overseen by corporate partner José Cúneo.

The 'competent and reliable' team at Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uria provides both corporate support and regulatory advice to clients including Compañía Minera Antapaccay, Agrícola Santa Regina (both recent gains), Orica Mining Services Perú and Aeropuertos del Perú. Led by 'very good' public administrative lawyer Fabiola Capurro, the team 'knows environmental law very well' and gives 'solutions in a short time'. Capurro led environmental advice to Inversiones Alxar regarding its $182m acquisition of Cumbres Andinas, which owns local mining company Marcobre and the Mina Justa copper mining project.
