Osterling Abogados is ‘one of the best insurance-related firms in Peru’, covering commercial, regulatory, corporate, and M&A issues related to the insurance and reinsurance sectors. The team is led by Enrique Ferrando, who has an excellent market profile and experience to match: he is hailed as ‘an excellent insurance litigator with deep experience of the Peruvian market’. Recent work highlights include advising Rimac Seguros y Reaseguros in a $5m claim brought by public entity Oficina de Normalización Previsional over a reinsurance payment in relation to Occupational Hazard Insurance policies. Gabriel Loli’s expertise has a distinct construction and engineering flavour, which he brings to bear in claims in relation to CAR Insurance policies. The team is a first port of call for many international insurance companies looking to register as a foreign reinsurer before the Peruvian authorities; recent clients in that space included the Mexican Aserta Afianzadora, Insurgentes Afianzadora and AXA Brasil. While associates Noriko Hasegawa and Alonso Barreda both left to Kennedys Peru, the firm welcomed Rabeth Pareja from an in-house position, and can also call on senior associate Kodiak Semsch’s civil litigation and arbitration expertise.

Rafael Corzo and Anahi Com co-head the practice at Miranda & Amado which, while it primarily advises on transactional matters as part of the firm’s wider corporate and finance activities, also acts for insurance companies in regulatory issues and represents clients in insurance-related disputes. Recent work included advising RIMAC Seguros on the development and structuring of a number of insurance and reinsurance products; as well as assisting a reinsurance company with a structure to bear a percentage of the risk associated with the $400m issuance of a surety bond. Roberto MacLean and Juan Luis Avendaño C are also recommended, as well as regulatory specialist Nelly Espinoza. Other clients include La Positiva Seguros y Reaseguros and Willis Group.

Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uria provides ‘an integral service, with response times suited to the client’s needs’. Raúl Ferrero co-heads the team with senior associate Omar Alfaro, whose ‘comprehensive industry knowledge provides a wide-ranging understanding of clients’ issues’. Recent highlights include representing Asociación Peruana de Empresas de Seguros against the Public Health Minister in a constitutional lawsuit over new legislation establishing restrictions to health insurance contracts between insurance companies and hospitals in relation to personal injury cases. Other clients include Osberk Ajustadores de Seguros, FBA Corredores de Seguros and Secrex. Senior associate Lorena Sarmiento is also recommended.

The ‘top-notchRodrigo, Elías & Medrano, Abogados receives a sizeable flow of insurance and reinsurance instructions related to the aviation sector, and regularly represents leading international aviation reinsurers in liability claims. ‘Outstanding lawyer and individualJorge Velarde has longstanding experience in the sector, and the team’s strength in reinsurance matters makes it the perfect platform for referrals from specialised international firms. Senior associate Fernando Hurtado de Mendoza is an ‘excellent professional’, and a key member of the practice.

Corporate partner Rafael Picasso heads the team at Estudio Echecopar member firm of Baker & McKenzie International, which provides corporate insurance and regulatory advice in Peru to insurers, reinsurers and brokers. Recent activity for the group includes advising Diviso Grupo Financiero on establishing a new insurance company in Peru, Trevia Compañía de Seguros; and assisting Compañia de Seguros de Vida Camara with regulatory issues in relation to its insurance operations in the country. Senior associate Luis Ernesto Marín has experience in financial and insurance regulation, and insurance-related compliance matters.

New to the Peruvian market, Kennedys Peru is the local office of the international player and has insurance at its core; with its regional network of offices now covering Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile, as well as Peru, it is able to act for clients across Latin America. Led by Marco Rivera, the former practice-head at Osterling Abogados, the team is adept at assisting international companies on all issues related to insurance and reinsurance work, including investments, regulatory matters, underwriting, claim management and arbitration, and it demonstrates particular expertise in the construction, real estate and natural resources sectors. A notable highlight was assisting Liberty International Underwriters and BMI with their incorporation and registration in the Peruvian market. Other client wins include Rimac Seguros & Reaseguros, Gallagher JAO and AM Trust. Associate Jorge Mere is highly regarded, as are Noriko Hasegawa and Alonso Barreda, who also recently joined from Osterling Abogados.

Lazo, De Romaña & CMB Abogados assists insurance and reinsurance companies, multinational corporations, brokers, banks and pension funds with general insurance-related corporate, regulatory and litigation matters. On the litigation side, the firm recently represented La Positiva Seguros y Reaseguros in administrative proceedings before INDECOPI’s court of appeal over alleged unfair competition practices. Commercial highlights include advising France’s COFACE on a number of regulatory matters, including the registration of insurance policies before the Peruvian insurance authority. Other clients include Pacífico Vida Compañía de Seguros y Reaseguros, PROTECTA, Gallagher and Insur. Practice co-heads Fátima De Romaña and Jorge Lazo are the key contacts.

Muñiz, Ramírez, Pérez-Taiman & Olaya Abogados will miss the expertise of former practice-head Manuel Quiroga Suito, who left to set up his own firm, Yrivarren & Quiroga Abogados. The very well regarded finance specialist Andrés Kuan-Veng, currently a director at Aval Perú Compañía de Seguros, now leads the practice. The team has a steady and varied pipeline of work, and advises AON, Miski Mayo, and Guy Carpenter Corredores de Reaseguros, among other clients in the sector.

Jesús Matos is the key name at Estudio Olaechea’s insurance practice. The team offers advice on a wide range of matters related to the operation of insurance companies in Peru, including insurance coverage, statutory and regulatory compliance, contracts, development of new insurance products, corporate organisation, and related litigation and administrative proceedings. Recent clients include Caterpillar International Services del Perú, ABN Amro Life, Assurant Solutions, and new client Marsh Rehder Corredores de Seguros. Experienced senior associate Xenia Tello is also noted.

Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados’ ‘excellent’ insurance practice is part of the firm’s wider corporate offering, and provides ‘responsible and client-oriented’ advice. The group focuses on regulatory issues and consumer protection matters, and recently advised Charles Taylor Adjusting on its incorporation and registration before the Peruvian authority. It is also assisting Seguros Sura with business development matters, including new insurance products, and services, and corporate and regulatory issues. Torres Carpio Portocarrero & Richter Abogados’ practice is built around the expertise of name partner Pedro Richter, who was legal counsel at leading insurance and reinsurance company Pacífico Seguros for two decades before founding the firm in 2010. The firm formed an association with DAC Beachcroft LLP in 2017, and caters for the legal needs of the UK-based firm’s clients in Peru. Representative clients include MAPFRE, El Pacífico, and RIMAC Internacional. The firm has a large client base in the banking and fishing sectors.
