WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Trump signed an executive order today addressing two pillars: cybersecurity for advanced AI and a voluntary pre-release government review framework for so-called covered frontier models.
  • The EO does not mandate licensing or government approval of new models. AI developers may, on a voluntary basis, share covered frontier models with the federal government in advance of public release for national security and cybersecurity assessment.
  • The EO establishes a voluntary cybersecurity “clearinghouse” coordinated by the Treasury Department and other federal agencies to identify and remediate vulnerabilities in unreleased AI systems, and expands hiring at the US Tech Force.
