The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the legal field has brought about numerous advancements, revolutionizing the way lawyers approach research and case preparation. However, recent incidents have raised concerns regarding the reliability and ethical implications of relying solely on AI models for legal research.

The New York Case – A Cautionary Tale

In a recent incident, a lawyer in New York relied on ChatGPT for legal research. The AI model provided the lawyer with case citations, which were then incorporated into a brief. Unfortunately, the opposing counsel discovered that the cited cases did not exist, prompting them to request verification. When the lawyer turned to ChatGPT again, it became apparent that the cases were fabricated. The Southern District of New York responded by issuing an order to show cause, potentially leading to sanctions against the lawyer for citing fraudulent cases.
